The seasons in Kansas tend to be well defined, with cold winters and very warm summers. Outdoor activities may be at their best between June and September when the summer heat blazes down. Alternatively, for a cheaper holiday, traveller could consider visiting in October when there may actually be less rain, mild temperatures and fewer crowds as well.
Not to be confused with the bright lights of New York’s major island, Manhattan, Kansas, is a lively college town set in rolling countryside which offers great outdoor activities in a relaxed setting.
The city lies in the middle of the famous Kansas prairies, and there are many ranches nearby which offer visitors the chance to enjoy aspects of the rural lifestyle. Take to specially marked trails on horseback, try cowboy skills, attend exciting rodeos and taste some wholesome Kansas country cooking.
Manhattan is also close to some beautiful hiking and trekking territory. Head to sites like Konza Prairie to walk gentle and demanding routes or take the short drive to Frank Anneberg Park, which has a specially stocked lake that is ideal for sport fishermen and also offers a great opportunity to try American sports like softball and football.
The town also has a superb zoo – the Sunset Zoo – which is home to 250 species from big mammals like tigers to fearsome invertebrates like scorpions. It’s a great way for kids and adults alike to learn about the world’s animal inhabitants.
Just a short drive down Interstate 70, tourists can find the charming city of Topeka, home to the Kansas Museum of Natural History and a fascinating museum dedicated to the landmark Supreme Court decision which ruled racial segregation in public schools illegal.
Meanwhile, to the north of Manhattan, the enormous expanse of Tuttle Creek Lake offers boating, fishing, bird-watching and water sports activities, as well as some gorgeous camping grounds – all within a few minutes of hotels in the centre of the town.
And the city is also a great place to enjoy America’s legendary cuisine. There are plenty of barbecue restaurants, steak houses and pizza joints just waiting to be discovered.
New York has seen a 82% decrease in demand for flights to the city compared to last year.
The bus service in Manhattan is not extensive, so most people use their own cars to get around, and visitors are advised to do the same. However, for those without their own wheels, taxis are easy to arrange and hotels will be happy to assist. Driving is recommended if you wish to reach cities like Topeka or Kansas City, as well as outdoor activity locations like Tuttle Creek Lake.
The airport at Manhattan (MHK) is well served by taxis, limousines and shuttle bus services, many of which will take you directly to your hotel doorstep. Some hotels require a 24-hour advanced notice when scheduling a pick-up, so plan in advance to avoid any stress upon arrival. An even better alternative may be to use one of the many car rental outlets, giving you total freedom of movement.
