With more than 30 state parks, an abundant forested area and a staggering 5,500-mile coastline, Maine is possibly the most serene state in the US.
Visitors coming off flights to Maine will immediately be transported into a place of tranquility and enjoy swimming in the cool lakes, drying off under a tree and picnicking under the clouds. In summer the sounds of loons provide a soothing wake up call before an invigorating canoe ride through one of Maine’s 2,500 lakes. There is no shortage of things to see and do in Maine from the Bar Harbor scenic region and Acadia National Park to Allagash National Wilderness Waterway, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House in Portland
Maine is also one of the largest producers of farm goods in the country. Apples, potatoes, dairy products and poultry are the top selling items from the state. A trip to Maine isn’t complete without feasting on its famous lobster. Pick a quiet stop on a pier and watch the sun set while enjoying some freshly cooked crustacean or if you’re visiting in summer the Maine Lobster Festival takes place in July and August.
In winter Maine can get very snowy and cold. Temperatures in January drop to six degrees (Celsius). The temperature in summer is mild with the warmest days in July and the most humid days in August.
Train and bus service is limited, making it harder to get around the state. The best and easiest way to get around its cities and towns is by walking.
In Arcadia National Park there are lots of bike trails, but biking on main roads can be dangerous.
The best way for getting around is by car since, apart from rush hour, traffic tends to be light.
Drivers should be wary of moose crossing signs and collisions between moose and cars are becoming more common.
