The Nile is one of the world’s most famous rivers – an ancient cradle of civilisation. The towns that have grown up on the river’s banks – such as Luxor, Aswa, Giza and Cairo — are the stuff of many an adventurer’s dream.
Every day, cruise ships and feluccas, the traditional wooden sailing boats, make their way through the river’s waters. The Nile Valley is home to iconic sites steeped in history: the Valley of the Kings, the mighty Pyramids, the Sphinx and the awe-inspiring temples of Luxor and Karnak.
The Nile Valley is typically hot and dry with almost no rain. The temperature often reaches more than 37 C (100 F) during the day from May through September, then dips to about 21 C (70 F) or 26 C (80 F) at night. During this time, it is often recommended to adjust your sleep schedule so you’re awake during the cooler parts of the day and sleeping mid-day when the heat is most intense. Temperatures are cooler from December through February, ranging from about 21 C (70 F) to 24 C (75 F) and sometimes dipping to about 15 C (60 F).
The best time to visit the Nile Valley is typically from about September through May when temperatures haven’t yet hit their peak. Some rain does fall from December through February, but it’s minimal.
June through August is considered the off season for the area, as it can be too hot to go outside.
Taxis are an easy way to get around within the cities of the Nile Valley. (Work with the taxi driver to agree on a price before your ride.) Buses, trains and domestic flights run from city to city. Hiring a car is also an option, but travellers will need an International Driving License and driving through the deserts without a guide is not recommended. Luxor Airport is situated 6 km (4 miles) east of the city.
