With its quaint historic centre, ornate fountains and beautiful beaches, the French city of Toulon has many different facades with which to attract tourists. Conveniently located on the French Riviera between the neighbouring cities of Nice and Marseille, Toulon sits on one of the largest harbours in Europe and is also home to a large French naval base. The harbour and promenade is the perfect place to wander, while you soak up the dialogue, produce and delicacies of the local residents. To the north of the harbour, the old town features a maze of narrow streets full of historic buildings, shops and fountains. After exploring the streets and squares of the historic centre, you can move on to the Upper Town, where you will find the city’s main square, Place de la Liberte, or make a visit to the Opera House. If you prefer to spend your time on a hot, sandy beach, then the Mourillon Beaches are the city’s most popular destinations for sun lovers, which offer plenty of facilities including playgrounds, restaurants and water sports to keep the whole family entertained. There is also a coastal footpath for avid walkers, which offers a charming journey past beaches and cottages to the Mejean Cove. Overlooking the city, Mount Faron is a 1640 ft (500 m) hill that features a memorial to the 1944 landings and the liberation of the city. You can reach the top by taking the red cable car from the city, or you can drive up the steep, winding road by car. The summit of Mount Faron not only offers impressive panoramic views of the city below, but is also the site of many events, including concerts, firework displays and music festivals.
The city has an extensive public transport system, with buses running through the city and its surroundings. You can book a bus ticket from the kiosk at the Place de la Liberte. To see more of the surrounding area, you can hire a local taxi, or take a ferry to reach other destinations, such as Corsica.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Toulon-Hyères Airport (TLN) is situated 12 miles (19 km) east of the city and the journey takes about 20 minutes. Official taxis are the most popular way to transfer from the airport into the city once your flight to Toulon has arrived, and are always available outside the terminal. Private transfers can also be booked at the airport. There is also a bus that runs between the train station and the airport four times a day until early evening.
