Kunming has pleasant spring-like temperatures throughout the year. The best period to go is usually from March to October as this is the perfect time to enjoy the gorgeous weather, the flowers in full bloom and many local festivals. This is also when cheaper flights can be found. Whilst a few of these months aren’t necessarily off-peak due to both national and school summer holidays, namely in July and August, this is still a great time to enjoy the regions natural splendour.

Known worldwide as ‘the city of eternal spring’, Kunming is famous for its gentle climate and tranquil atmosphere. In fact, many flock here to enjoy the idyllic highland landscape that surrounds the region, as well as the laid-back nature of the locals.
Kunming has a beautiful selection of temples for you to explore. Not only are they fine examples of classic Buddhist architecture, but they also add to the overall peacefulness of this destination. The ancient Yuantong Temple is a truly spectacular sight, and is an especially popular retreat when the delicate cherry blossoms begin to fall, creating an almost dream-like view. Also, if you walk a little further into the mountain, you’ll come across a fantastic zoo with a great selection of local and international wildlife.
For an outstanding view of the local area, spend the day at Xishan Forest Park where you can hike to a lookout point over the vast Dianchi Lake. The unforgettable Dragon Gate can also be found here, clinging to the mountain edge. The impressive sites don’t end here either, as the unique and incredibly rare Stone Forest is nearby.
Once you’ve had your fill of Kunming’s natural delights, head into the city to the Guandu Old Town. This is a perfect place to relax and people watch, as well as sample some of the local delicacies like over-the-bridge rice noodles and Yiliang roasted duck. We recommend finishing your trip at the Kunming flower and bird market. The colours, smells and sounds are sure to leave a lasting memory of this beautiful city.
Getting around Kunming is fairly easy and quite enjoyable on foot, but if you really want to experience everything the region has to offer, a car rental would be an ideal option. If you prefer public transport, the city is well connected to the surrounding region via buses and railways, as well as plenty of taxis.
The nearest airport to the city is Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) and once here you can take advantage of transportation facilities such as the quick and efficient subway line. Or if you prefer, there is a shuttle bus service that has regular routes into the city. There is also a designated taxi rank, but remember to pre-agree the fee with your driver before departing.
