Anna Maria Island is just off the west coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters saw it named as one the top 10 U.S. islands for 2013 by TripAdvisor.

There’s a very good chance of glimpsing dolphins, turtles and manatees as you ride on your two-wheel steed. One-hour ($40) and two-hour ($60) tours are available.

Paddleboard – AMI Paddleboard Adventures, Holmes Beach

Paddleboarding is a great way to explore the Anna Maria’s shoreline and inlets. Spot turtles, sharks, manatees and dolphins as well as manta rays and some fabulous birds along the way. Board hire is $25 per hour. A tour costs $60 (cheaper for groups).

Hang out at the beach – Bradenton Beach

Some of the island’s best family-run restaurants and shops are a short walk from this handsome “sugar-sand” beach.

Play miniature golf – The Fish Hole Miniature Golf, Bradenton Beach

Nice little 18-hole miniature golf course, that’s floodlit in the evening. It’s $7.50 a round.

Explore the mangroves – Coquina Bay Walk

A series of trails and boardwalks meander through Anna Maria’s mangroves, getting you up close and personal with some of the island’s feathered residents. It takes around 30 minutes to complete the whole walk.

Check out the art scene – Village of the Arts, Bradenton

This charming area of restored 1920’s and 30’s cottages is home to 30 establishments, including galleries, studios, cafes, healing arts, jewellery, fashion and books. Most galleries are open on Fridays and Saturdays. Locals host tours on the first Friday and Saturday of each month.

Go shopping – Bridge Street, Anna Maria

The shops here sell a variety of clothes, jewellery, gifts and furnishings. There are also several restaurants, cafes and bars.

Get pampered – Body and Sol Day Spa

Massage, waxing, pedicures, manicures, hair styling for men and women, facials, and yoga classes are all available here.
