In exciting news for Norwegian and international travellers, Norway’s first new airport in 40 years is set to open within the Arctic Circle. The Norwegian government has recently approved proposed plans for a fresh domestic and international air hub, which will open up the Helgeland region in the north of the country.

Located just south of the Arctic Circle, Helgeland offers immediate access to Norway’s top Arctic attractions. Bathed in midnight sunshine in the summer months, the area is an excellent place to see the Northern Lights, as well as embark on southbound coastal road trips and offshore island hopping adventures amongst the thousands of mountainous skerries. For business and leisure travellers, the new airport will bring these unique Norway experiences within easy reach.

London-based architecture firm Haptic has collaborated with Norwegian designer Nordic to produce initial plans for the airport’s terminal areas, which will reflect the natural beauty of the Helgeland landscape and coastline. The jagged roof design is inspired by the surrounding Traena Mountains, creating dramatic spaces within the terminal building.

Given the inherent challenges posed by attempting construction in the Arctic climate, a date is yet to be set for the grand opening.
