Spain, Turkey, Egypt and Florida are the destinations of choice for holidaymakers heading off this weekend. The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) is estimating that 1.8 million travellers will depart the nation’s airports this Spring Bank Holiday, which also marks the start of the school half term.

Perennial city-break favourites Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome and New York are also attracting the greatest number of visitors, Abta reports.

While airports will be quieter this weekend compared to last year, Heathrow Airport is still expecting around 400,000 travellers to pass through its halls.

Gatwick is anticipating that about 220,000 people will fly, an eight per cent decrease on last year’s figures. At Stansted, officials are expecting 120,000 flyers, 20 per cent fewer than last year.

TravelMole reports that more than 130,000 travellers will depart from Manchester Airport and 65,000 will leave from Birmingham.
