Birmingham International Airport has called on the region’s local council to provide passengers with an early “Christmas gift”, by approving plans for a runway extension.

A decision is expected from Solihull Council on Monday (December 15), regarding the license for a 400 metre extension of the UK’s six largest airport’s runway.

This is particularly important for the region as forecasts have suggested that around 27 million passengers will travel through the airport by 2030; a figure that would have to be reduced by four million if the application was denied.

Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham Airport, believes that the decision is important to “improve global connectivity”.

He said: “Our proposals for a runway extension are proportionate and comply with all appropriate National, Regional and Local Policies. This is a demanding project and the first critical step in its delivery is gaining planning approval.”

In 2007, more than nine million travellers flew from the airport to a number of domestic and international destinations.
