Inconsistencies in security screening are the primary contributor to stress levels among business travellers, according to new research.

In a study by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), two thirds (66 per cent) of respondents claimed that the unpredictable length of time spent having to wait at airport security areas – together with inconsistencies in the security procedures – was their number one gripe.

Business travellers, who are often pressed for time and already stressed because of upcoming meetings, are having a harder time travelling in the wake of last summer’s security scare.

In August an alleged terror plot was foiled, resulting in stepped-up security at all UK airports. Policies regarding luggage restrictions and other measures sometimes vary from airport to airport, and it is difficult to predict just how long it may take to pass through the security area.

The advice from airlines is, naturally, to leave plenty of time in case you are held up for longer than expected.

With growing air passenger numbers, stress levels are set to rise further unless steps are taken to streamline the security checking process. SAS itself has introduced fast track security measures in Copenhagen and Stockholm.

Other causes of stress among business travellers were travelling to and from airports, checking in for flights, and problems with other passengers, according to the report.

“Travelling for business or leisure can be a stressful experience for a number of reasons,” said SAS UK and Ireland general manager Lars Ove-Filipson.

“It is important that service providers such as airlines and airports work to minimise unnecessary stress to passengers while they are in transit.”

SAS flies from Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports.
