As many as five million British holidaymakers will book their 2009 summer break by the end of December, new research shows.

Travel Weekly magazine found that ten per cent of all holidaymakers are intending to book their summer break before the end of the year in order to secure the cheapest deals.

Furthermore, one quarter of those planning to make an early booking said they had already started browsing brochures with a view to picking their preferred break.

While many of the eager holidaymakers wanted to beat the rush in order to ensure their first choice of destination, the majority cited a desire to make financial savings.

Tom Costley of TNS, the company that conducted the research, commented: “This early indication of the prospects for the 2009 season must be reassuring for the holiday industry.

“There seems to be resilience among large sections of the population that holidays are of sufficient importance that it is worth planning ahead for 2009, despite economic uncertainty.”
