Heathrow Airport is to be one of the stars of the Coen brothers’ latest film, Gambit.

Hollywood heavyweights Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth – fresh from his Oscar victory for The King’s Speech – filmed scenes for the new film in Terminal 5 earlier this week.

The film, which is a remake of the 1960’s crime classic, also called Gambit, has a stellar cast, with Stanley Tucci and Cloris Leachman – best known for her role as Ida Gorski in popular US sitcom Malcolm in the Middle – also tipped to take up roles over the next few weeks.

Colin Firth is taking on the role that was originally filled by Michael Caine in the 1960s film, playing a man who plans to steal a priceless artwork from the world’s richest man – who will be played by Alan Rickman. Firth has said that the four years it has taken to finally get started on the film had been a “tortuous process”.

The last major filming work to take place in Heathrow Terminal 5 was the T-Mobile flashmob commercial, which involved a fake crowd of passengers, taxi drivers, cabin crew and baggage handlers, breaking into dances – much to the delight and surprise of passengers arriving at the airport.
