Dogs might make best friends, but they’re far from the easiest of travel companions (read our blog: Making a passenger out of a pooch – how to take your pet on a flight). Thankfully a growing number of companies are coming up with ingenious ways to make dog ownership more compatible with travel. (The featured image of Man’s Best Friend is by bokswagen.)

DogVacay

Putting your dog in a kennel for a week is like putting your best pal in prison for a year. DogVacay  matches travelling dog owners with a host (local to their home or destination) who has signed up to take care of pooches in their household. The fee is $15 (about £9) per night. At the time of writing the company is recruiting hosts in UK cities.

Sleepypod Air

A large number of airlines allow small breeds to fly in the passenger cabin (book ahead). The Sleepypod Air is a smart-looking dog carrier that can be compressed to fit underneath an aircraft seat for take-off and landing, and then expanded in flight to provide more room for its occupant. It meets all carry-on pet regulations (by the US Federal Aviation Administration).

Popware for Pets

Keeping a tail-wagger fed and watered when on the road is no easy task. Popware for Pets’ range of expandable/collapsible bowls, travel cups, mats (for preventing spills), and suction lids (for keeping food fresh) are handy for making dinnertime a little less messy.

Pack n Go Dog Bag

This incredibly complex backpack contains features for both dog and owner. It’s got two detachable, water tight bowls, a pocket for stowing dog poo bags, space for treats and toys, a water bladder, bum-bag and a shoulder pocket with enough room for an mp3 player or smartphone.

Kurgo Wander Bed

A cold, hard floor doesn’t make much a place to lie down, especially after a long day travelling in the car or cargo hold. The Kurgo Wander Bed has a plush fleece top for comfort and warmth and a grippy, non-skid bottom. It rolls up like a sleeping bag has its own handle, making it easy to transport.
