An overwhelming majority of Britons remain deeply sceptical about predictions of a baking hot summer in the UK, new research has revealed.
While the Met Office has forecast “a barbecue summer” with temperatures soaring well into the 30s, Thomas Cook says just one in five Brits believe the hype.
Those aged 18 to 24 are apparently the most optimistic, with almost one in three predicting sun, while more-experienced demographics remain cynical.
What’s more, their reservations appear to be backed up by America’s equivalent of the Met Office. The US National Centers for Environmental Prediction is among the agencies forecasting yet another glum and drizzly summer for the British Isles.
“They believe it will be cooler and rainier than average, casting a small but well-formed black cloud over the British weather predictions,” TTG quoted former BBC weather forecaster Michael Fish as saying.
Thomas Cook spokesman Pete Constanti added: “Although we’re a nation of weather-watchers, our research shows that we’re not quite ready to leave behind years of summer hurt and believe this year’s forecast of a scorching British summer.”
