A Welsh MP has called for capacity to be expanded at Cardiff International Airport.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Cynon Valley MP Ann Clwyd said that centralisation at London airports should not deter smaller airports from growing.
She branded the trend among many Welsh travellers to opt for English hubs as “ludicrous” and said more should be done to strengthen regional gateways.
Her comments came barely a month after bmibaby announced that it is boosting its services from Cardiff, increasing frequencies to Belfast and Glasgow international.
Weighing in on the debate, Welsh secretary Paul Murphy noted that Cardiff already services some 61 UK and European destinations, ranging from Alicante to Warsaw.
“Although Cardiff International Airport is expected to increase its share of the growing aviation industry in the UK, many people from south Wales will still need to travel outside Wales to fly to their destinations,” he complained to The Cynon Valley Leader.
