The majority of young travellers want onboard Wi-Fi access when flying on business, new research has found.

Barclaycard Business revealed that two-thirds of business travellers aged 18 to 30 want the high-tech facility to be installed in commercial aircraft fleets. By comparison, just 40 per cent of 51 to 65 year-old business travellers backed the technology.

The survey also found that nearly half of all travellers want technology that would allow them to use their mobile phones for non-voice communications such as SMS messaging.

“As business travel continues to rise, so too does the need for technological advancements designed to save travellers’ time and money,” commented Barclaycard Business spokesperson Denise Leleux in an interview with The Times.

She added: “Travel technology is constantly evolving, enabling them to do the things they want regardless of location.”

Despite the demand for high-tech onboard facilities, however, recent research by Harris Interactive found that almost three quarters of travellers remain vehemently opposed to in-flight phone calls.
