More than 1,000 passengers found themselves stranded at Heathrow Airport last night (December 23), as fog grounded some 140 flights.

The airport has also cancelled 29 flights today, and some services from London City and Gatwick have also been suspended, the BBC reports. However, the situation is expected to improve quickly and a repetition of last year’s extended disruption by fog is not likely.

There are minor delays at Stansted, but at other airports around the country flights are largely leaving on time.

Nevertheless, passengers should check with their airline for the latest information before they set out for the airport.

Departures at Bristol, Birmingham and East Midlands Airport are getting away on time, although two British Airways flights from Manchester have been cancelled.

Last year thick fog over several days caused great disruption, with Heathrow Airport hit especially badly. The west London hub is over-crowded, meaning that there are no spare take-off slots that can be used to ease the pressure when fog disrupts services.
