Southampton Airport engineers have won a prestigious accolade for their efforts in saving energy at the hub.

The award was given by airport operator BAA after votes were cast by hundreds of engineers from across the company.

Southampton was awarded the prize for “sourcing new and innovative ways of saving energy, using efficient lighting systems”.

Engineers at the airport have installed a new lighting system which makes huge savings on carbon emissions, energy use and costs.

It produces a minimal amount of heat and has low voltage, coupled with efficient power use. When compared to conventional lights, this new lighting system reduces CO2 emissions by around 75 per cent.

The lighting system, which “gives off little or no glare”, was designed and built by Portsmouth-based firm Gemma Lighting and Displays Ltd and is ideal for use in large public spaces such as an airport.
