Yes, you read that right – summer does indeed come to Sweden, for all those who thought otherwise.

According to a new poll by the Swedish National Railway (SJ), the stunning city of Stockholm is the favourite summer destination for Swedes from all over the country.

For the third year in a row, Swedes have flocked to Stockholm for their summer breaks, enjoying its characterful Gamla Stan (old town), harbour and shopping, alongside strolls in Djurgården, swims in Lake Mälaren and sunbathing in the tranquil Hagaparken.

While 31 per cent of Swedes nominated Stockholm and the country’s west coast for their summer holidays, 29 per cent opted for Gothenburg – perhaps drawn by Liseberg, Sweden’s largest amusement park and the Kolmarden Safari Park.

So, if the locals like it, why not take a leaf out of their book and check out Stockholm this summer? It’s a quick hop from UK airports and youth hostels are plentiful, if not quite as affordable as other Scandinavian cities such as Copenhagen.

Cheapflights stayed on The Red Boat (www.theredboat.com) at Mälaren – a huge old ship moored a stone’s throw from Gamla Stan that has been converted into a youth hostel. Charm personified.
