British travellers are not likely to change their habits during the economic downturn, it has been suggested.

That is according to ABTA – The Travel Association, which has said that despite belts being tightened Brits will still aim to plan trips because they “have it in their psyche”.

Steve Barnes, senior membership marketing manager at ABTA, did note however that people will now perhaps be more considerate about the locations they choose for their holidays.

He also asserted that destination outside the eurozone will rise in popularity as a result.

Mr Barnes said: “We don’t believe that they are going to drastically change, because people have it in their psyche that they want to take holidays. “We don’t think there will be a huge downturn in the holiday market; this is also coupled by the fact that there is less capacity in the market.

With the failure of XL airlines last year there is now less capacity, so operators can be operating still with quite high margins with quite high load factors.”
