Regular travellers who use Manchester Airport are being asked to give their opinion on the public transport options available at the airport as part of a European research project.

Passengers at Manchester, as well as people in France, Germany, Holland and Ireland are being asked to take part in a short project that will be fed into a study entitled the Inter-modal Transport Information Services System (ITSS).

The Manchester Evening News reports that 25 volunteers are being sought who would need to be free on Thursday, May 31 when they will spend the morning on a computer testing the system for journeys between Manchester and Cologne.

The ITSS service would enable passengers to access transport links and timings using their mobile phones once arriving at their destination, cutting down on the number of car journeys and taxi rides.

Manchester Airport has become a centre for research in recent months, with Bluetooth technology recently installed to provide passengers with travel information via their mobile phones and a trial of radio frequency ID tags in boarding cards.

Geoff Muirhead, the chief executive of Manchester Airport Group, said last week that he thought Manchester would be the second busiest UK airport, after Heathrow, in 15 years time.
