In 1914, the U.S. naval air station was established in Pensacola and the National Museum of Naval Aviation continues to draw millions of visitors to Pensacola every year. The museum pays homage and respect to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots who trained at Pensacola. While your flight to Pensacola might not be piloted by a Blue Angel, you can still see The Blue Angles and their fancy flying at the naval air station, where the fastest fighter jets are based. Take a walk to historic Fort Barrancas during the visit to the naval station and take in the gorgeous views of Perdido Key and Santa Rosa Island.
Pensacola’s city centre has been revitalised and re-energised over the years. Today, visitors to Pensacola can experience a centre full of theatres, restaurants, bars and nightlife. Don’t dismiss the various Pensacola festivals like Florida Springfest, a 3-day music festival channelling the Woodstock era, which boasts big name acts like Bonnie Rait, the Allman Brothers, Jethro Tull and more.
Whether your trip leaves you at Fort Pickens or picking up seashells on the powdery-white beaches, it’s hard not to enjoy this Florida destination.
Situated on the Gulf of Mexico, Pensacola’s climate ranges from hot and humid in the summer (June to August) to mild and sometimes rainy in the winter (between December and February). The city has an average 343 days of sunshine a year. Late summer and autumn can be very windy.
Hop aboard one of the trolleys to tour Pensacola. The Escambia County Area Transit System runs the trolley that departs frequently from the Pensacola Visitor Center. The trolley runs during the week through historic Pensacola Village, downtown, Palafox Street, the waterfront and North Hill Preservation District. Renting a bike is another great way to get around. Biking is very popular in sunny Florida – find rentals at the beach or through your hotel concierge. Taxis are also available if you need a ride.
