Scranton is one of the largest cities in the State of Pennsylvania. It is the cultural centre of the Lackawanna River Valley, and has been in existence since 1866. The town gets its name from Selden and George Scranton, brothers who built the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad. In the 1880s, the town became the Electric City, when the first streetcar system was established there. This is why the Electric City Trolley Museum is one of its major attractions, today. Visitors can view restored trolley cars and interurban trams, and also see them in operation.
The city is home to the Houdini Museum, the only museum in the world that is dedicated to the famous magician. Visitors can see a display of Houdini memorabilia, and also experience a magic tour. Another spine-tingling attraction is the Scranton Ghost Walk. It happens 365 days of the year, at 7.45 pm and takes visitors through the more historic parts of the city. The Everhart Museum of Natural Science, History & Art, has extensive ethnographic, fossil and painting collections. The Montage Mountain ski resort is a major attraction for fans of winter sport, and has Pennsylvania’s longest snowtubing trails, 2 terrain parks and 26 trails.
Interstate 80, 81 and 84, serve road travel into the city, with private coach companies travelling to larger cities. Travel within the city is available from a network of private taxis, which can be booked by telephone. Public transport is provided by companies that run a network of buses in the city, and also to smaller towns like Carbondale and Daleville. Because of its history, rail transport is extensive within Scranton, with seasonal excursions on steam trains, passenger services within in the city and rail connections to New Jersey and other states.
