    American Airlines Check-in

Online check-in is available between 24 hours and two hours before the flight is scheduled to depart. At airports, there are self-service check-in machines and counter check-in desks.

For international flights, the recommended check-in time is one hour before take-off. At London Heathrow Airport, there's a Flagship Check-In area, available to First and Business-Class flyers. AAdvantage Executive Platinum and oneworld Emerald members may also use this facility when travelling in Economy Class.

There are Self-Service Check-In machines at Paddington Railway Station in Central London. They are located at the Heathrow Express ticket office on platforms 6 and 7. Once passengers arrive at Heathrow, they just need to drop off their luggage at the American Airlines bag-drop in Terminal 3, Zone B. Passengers travelling with just carry-on luggage may go directly to departures.

    American Airlines baggage allowance

Hand luggage: one carry-on item. There's no weight limit, but the piece of luggage must fit in the baggage frames in the check-in area, and a personal item such as a laptop bag.

Checked: one bag weighing up to 23kg (50lbs). Checking-in a second bag costs $60. This fee is waived for several classes of passengers including full-fare Economy passengers, First and Business-Class flyers. First and Business Class may check-in three bags free of charge.

Excess: the fee is $60 per bag for items that weigh between 23 and 32kg (50-70lbs). Oversize bags - those measuring between 158 and 320cm (63-126in) (length + width + height) - carry a fee of $150 per bag. Economy passengers can check-in up to eight additional bags (on top of the two-bag allowance) for $150 per bag.

    American Airlines legroom

    Seat pitch: 79-89cm (31-35in)

    Pre-arranged seating

    Yes, during the booking process.

    Passenger change details

Once a reservation has been booked online, changes can be made provided you log into the American Airlines website with your AAdvantage number and password. Passengers can change the reservation name, cancel the reservation and select/change seats. Changes can also be made by telephone: contact the reservations centre.

    Child fares

Passengers travelling with an infant will need to make their booking through the website first and then contact the local reservations office, providing their record locator and the infant date of birth. On international routes, infants seated in an adult's lap travel for about 10 per cent of the adult fare. Children aged 2-11 travel at a 25 per cent discount.

    Senior fares

American Airlines, American Eagle, and American Connection may offer senior fares in some domestic US markets for passengers aged 65 years or older. For further information, call American Airlines Reservations.

    Pets

AA only accept pets (cats and dogs only) for travel from the United Kingdom to the US and beyond. As the airline does not accept pets to the UK, only pets that will live permanently in the US can be transported from the UK. The cost to any US destination is $175 per kennel.

    Carrying musical instruments

Small instruments may be carried onboard as your one item of cabin baggage. Alternatively, musical instruments no bigger than 100cm (39in) may be checked in. The cost of this will be $50, if it's your second bag (first bags are free) and $150 if it's your third. Musical instruments longer than 100cm are considered oversize and the fee for this is $150.

    In-flight service

On international flights the meal service is complimentary. There's seatback video (on Boeing 777 aircraft) or overhead screens showing movies, news and comedy shows.

American's frequent-flyer plan is called AAdvantage.

    Airline alliances

American is a member of the oneworld alliance.

    Airline overview

American Airlines is one of the largest carriers in the world, operating more than 3,400 flights per day to 250 cities in more than 40 countries.

Company lore has it that master aviator Charles Lindbergh flew the first flight of what was to become AA. In 1926, Lindbergh, as chief pilot of Robertson Aircraft Corporation flew from Chicago to St. Louis.

AA has three regional carriers - American Eagle Airlines, Executive Airlines, which operates as American Eagle and Chautauqua Airlines, which operates as "AmericanConnection".

In 2010 AA inked a deal with fellow oneworld alliance members British Airways and Iberia to cooperate on transatlantic routes.
