Airline Overview

Discount carrier US Airways is the fifth largest airline in America. It flies to almost 240 destinations across North and Central America, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Europe. In 2005, the airline merged with America West; the new airline retains the name US Airways, but incorporates all flights and aircraft from both previous airlines.

 

Check-in

Online check-in is available from 24 hours until 90 minutes before the scheduled flight departure. For domestic travel, check-in desks close 30 minutes before departure (45 minutes for Atlanta, Orlando and Washington Dulles); while for international travel they close 60 minutes before departure. Exceptions apply to departures from the following airports, where passengers with bags must complete check-in at least 45 minutes before departure: Baltimore, Buffalo, Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Maui, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Reno/Tahoe and Seattle.

Baggage

Carry-on: one bag plus one personal item, which includes a handbag, briefcase or laptop bag. Items must fit in the overhead compartment or under your seat, and are restricted in size to 36 x 23 x 56 cm.

Checked: when booking online the first checked bag costs $15, the second $25 and the third-to-ninth $100. At the airport the first and second bag cost $20 and $30 respectively. The basic weight allowance is 23kg.

Excess: bags weighing between 23kg and 32kg are subject to a minimum charge of $65 (higher if booked at the airport or if relating to any bag other than your first one). Items weighing between 32kg and 45kg are subject to a minimum fee of $115, while no bags over 45kg are permitted.

Passenger Change Details

Changes can be made online or via the reservations centre, subject to a $100 fee on domestic US flights and $200 fee on international services, plus the difference in fare. US Airways also operates a 'Move Up' programme for flights within the Americas, allowing you to switch to an earlier flight on the same day as your original departure for a reduced rate. Cancellations can be made any time prior to departure, with the value of the ticket being credited to any future travel up to one year from the original issue date (administrative fees apply). Name changes cannot be made.

Child Fares

For domestic US flights infants under two years of age travel for free on an adult's lap (the adult must be over 18 years old). For international flights, however, infants must pay ten per cent of the adult fare in addition to any surcharges and taxes. Bookings for infants cannot me placed online, but must be made via the reservations centre. All other children up to the age of 12 are subject to the appropriate fare. Child fares are available on some routes.

Special fares are available for seniors aged 65 or over on certain routes.

Pets

Pets are allowed in the cabin on domestic US flights for a $100 fee each way, provided they remain inside their approved container. Carry-on pets are not allowed on transatlantic flights or services to or from Hawaii and Barbados.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Musical instruments are allowed as hand luggage as long as they do not exceed 190 linear cm. If the instrument is too large, an additional seat must be purchased.

In-flight Service

Transatlantic economy passengers are served complimentary meals consisting of entrees, salads, breads and desserts. On most flights within the US, snacks must be purchased but drinks are provided free of charge. Movie, TV and radio programmes are available on long-haul flights.

Dividend Miles, the frequent flyer program for US Airways allows you to earn miles when you fly with US Airways, members of the Star Alliance, as well other partners: Bahamas Air, Caribbean Star Airlines, Caribbean Sun Airlines and Qantas.
