Very crowded flight. Staff brought refreshments regularly and the food was surprisingly good. But checking was very slow and they allowed way too many people with large suitcases on board making onboarding and off-boarding very slow and chaotic.

Sharm el-Sheikh airport overview

The gateway to Egypt’s most popular holiday resorts, Sharm El Sheikh Airport, also known as Ophira Airport, is very busy during holiday season, when budget carriers like bmi and Thomas Cook bring hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers from Europe to the resorts of Sharm El Sheikh Airport and Dahab.

The airport has gradually been modernised over the past decade, with the modern Terminal 2 building absorbing much of the old Terminal 1 building’s traffic. Although there are steady complaints about luggage theft and dirty facilities, the small airport manages to process more than seven million passengers a year, making it Egypt’s second-busiest airport, just behind Cairo.

It’s also a good idea to speak to a few different drivers and make out you have other potential options to give yourself a better chance of haggling and agreeing a good price. There are minibuses you can get from outside of Terminal 1, pay as you get onboard and just tell the driver where you wish to be dropped off as there are no bus stops along the route. Finally you can rent a car although this isn’t a great idea unless you are familiar with driving around Egypt. The airport is only 15 minutes away by car so if you’re not planning to explore further your best bet is either the bus or taxi.
