The love affair that British holidaymakers enjoy with this island goes back several generations. Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and as well as the clubs, bars and restaurants, the island boasts lush forests, mountains, volcanoes, stunning coastlines and spectacular beaches. To kick off your holiday head to Spain’s highest mountain, El Teide, located in a national park - a day’s adventure lies ahead when you venture out to the world’s third highest volcano (on a volcanic ocean island). It’s a challenging climb, but worth a visit for the spectacular views. No time for a five-hour trek? There’s a cable car that will whizz sightseers to within 200 metres of the summit in less than ten minutes.
After taking direct flights to Tenerife, why not hire a car and drive to Loro Parque Zoo, just outside the northern city of Puerto de la Cruz? It’s a respected animal protection foundation as well as a huge animal park. Jungle Park, close to the popular resort area of Los Cristianos, is also well worth a visit (free shuttle bus from Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos). Scuba diving and other water sports are also hugely popular on the island. Activities available in the south include surfing, wind surfing, speed boat parashooting and jet-ski. First-time visitors arriving on cheap flights to Tenerife will fall in love with the beaches. Playa Americas and Los Cristianos are two of the most popular areas with excellent beach facilities. If you’re planning on taking a Tenerife flight in the spring, time it so you’re there for Carnival, a raucous and colourful event.
