Bucolic Britain: our little island is home to some of the world’s most gorgeous countrysides. From rolling hills dotted with sheep to rocky coastlines and lush forests, the UK is a country ambler’s paradise. Below, we profile seven of the loveliest walks in Britain, from the Isle of Wight to Scotland. Lace up your hiking boots and embark on one of these journeys.

Peebles, Scotland

Scotland’s quiet border country offers a bevy of tranquil walking experiences. The small village of Peebles is a great starting point. Located on the River Tweed and adjacent to Cademuir Hill, the town is also home to 13th century ruins.

Cheap Flights To Scotland

Blisland to Lavethan Wood, Cornwall

Starting from the historic Inn and churchyard in the quaint village of Blisland, this approachable trek covers Mill Race stream before leading into Lavethan Wood. The ancient wood is populated with beech, sycamore, and chestnut trees, while the ground is carpeted with ferns.

Tennyson Trail, Isle of Wight

Pro tip: any landscape that is sought out by poets will probably offer remarkable natural beauty. Such is the case with Tennyson Trail on the Isle of Wight. The 14-mile trek was favoured by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and winds its way among forests, Brighstone Down, the area around Carisbrooke Castle, and a pinnacle from which point the entire island is visible.

Hackfall Wood, Yorkshire

One of the better spots in the UK in which to go for an autumn stroll, the richly forested Hackfall in central Yorkshire was a favourite setting for JMW Turner. Dotted with narrow footpaths that wind their way through the foliage, the forest offers quiet, unspoiled nature in the raw.

Tintern, Wales

Yes, this is the Tintern that gave William Wordsworth inspiration for his poem Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey. A visit will reveal why the poet drew such inspiration from the landscape. In addition to the picturesque ruins, scenic meadows and woodlands dotted by deer and wildflowers make for an exceptionally beautiful stretch of land.

Foxley Wood, Norfolk

Foxley Wood has history: the tranquil forest goes so far back that it appears in the Domesday Book. Animal lovers will be interested to know that the forest is home to more than 250 species of wildlife.

Brede High Woods, East Sussex

Brede High Woods are some of the most ancient in the Britain, and a walk into this enchanting forest feels like a journey back in time. The historic town of Battle is nearby for those looking for an extra dose of history.
