As 2013 slowly slips away, our attention inevitably turns to next year’s holiday plans. What does 2014 hold for the intrepid traveller? With all aspects in mind, here’s a list of seven hot predictions to inspire your next trip…

Brazil, the Top Travel Destination of 2014

With next year’s FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2016, Brazil has been voted 2014’s top destination.

Be it trekking through the epic Iguaçu Falls, drifting along the Amazon or surfing the pristine shoreline, visitors are sure to be kept very busy.

Hipmunk Travel App

Unlike many of the best-known hotel-booking apps, Hipmunk includes less traditional lodgings, such as Airbnb and HomeAway.

Voted one of the best new travel apps, Hipmunk is expected to be the most successful travel-aid of 2014.

Mind Matters Most

According to Top 10 Wellness Travel Trends for 2014, the mind matters most for travellers.

This healthy-mind bandwagon promotes meditation and yoga retreats, so travellers head home post-holiday with a relaxed mind, fully rested and ready to take on home life.

Cheaper hotels in Europe

Hotel rates in much of Europe are set to decrease in 2014 and major airlines, such as Air France KLM, adding capacity. Great news for those watching their pennies.

Antarctica is hot for 2014

The Southern continent is one of the “hottest” places to visit in 2014 for an experience of a lifetime.

From penguin colonies to killer whales and glaciers to albatross islands, a tour of Antarctica will leave your jaw on the, em, ice.

The Queen’s Terminal

Heathrow Airport has announced that the new Terminal 2 will be dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II on June 4 2014.

The Queen is no stranger to the airport, having opened its first building in 1955. The terminal will have all the usual features, but, in a new greener guise, it’ll take 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources.

Super-quick in-flight Wi-Fi

Get your phones and laptops out folks, because 2014 could be the start of high-speed in-flight Internet usage if Ofcom’s plans come to fruition.

The communications regulator is proposing to license a new satellite system – Earth Stations on Mobile Platforms or ESOMPs – for planes, trains and ships.

ESOMPs can deliver connections to travellers that are up to 10 times faster than those currently available.
