Situated in Changning District, approximately 13km (8 miles) west of Shanghai is Hongqiao International Airport. The facility serves as one of the main transit hubs for China and more than 90 airlines make use the airport’s facilities.

The airport is divided into two terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The latter was opened in early 2010 and is four times the size of the original terminal. The new terminal houses 90 per cent of the carriers and Terminal 1 is now used for international flight and by Spring Air, the low-cost airline.

Since the completion of the Shanghai Pudong Airport on the other side of the city, the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport has been used mainly for domestic flights. However, Hongqiao Airport is closer to the city and has excellent connections to nearby hotels.

Terminal Transfer

The terminals are far apart, but there is a free bus shuttle service that runs between the two at 15-minute intervals and during peak hours this increases to every five minutes. The trip takes approximately 15 minutes and the service runs from 6:30am to 11pm daily.

Getting into Town

Train: There are a number of subway trains that depart from the airport regularly on Metro Lines 2 and 10. The journey costs CNY 6 (about £0.50) and takes 35 minutes.

Taxis: The taxi pick-up zone is directly outside the Arrivals area and should take 25-40 minutes to get to the city centre. The fare should be agreed upon prior to departure from the airport and should cost in the region of CNY 60-100 (approximately £6-£10). Tips are not expected but you can round up to the next coin or bill if the service is good.

Bus: Buses depart regularly to the biggest hotels in the area from the Arrivals Terminal and there are also a number of long distance coaches available. The Airport City Shuttle departs every 15–25 minutes from Terminal 1 to the city centre and the 45-minute journey will cost CNY 4. There are also public buses going to a number of destinations around Shanghai; Bus No. 925 runs to the People’s Square every ten minutes for CNY 4. Buses are not a convenient transport option if you have lots of luggage, as they tend to be very crowded.

Car Parking

There are almost 600 parking spaces available at a range of rates for hourly, daily and monthly parking. T1 starts at CNY 7 (£0.67) for the first hour and CNY 5 (£0.48) per hour after that, while T2 charges CNY 20 (£1.90) for the first two hours, and CNY 5 (£0.48) per hour after that with a daily maximum of CNY 60 (£5.70). There are increased charges for larger cars and other vehicles.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: there are a number of banks, currency exchange offices and ATMs throughout both terminals. There is a post office in each of the terminals.

Luggage: All standard luggage services are available, including lost luggage and left luggage. Porters can be hired but tipping is not allowed.

Conference and business: There is a wide selection of 24-hour business and conference facilities available at the Shanghai International Airport Hotel such as meeting rooms, telephone, fax, photocopying, catering services and VIP lounges.

Other facilities: There are two clinics, a beauty salon, and smoking areas at the airport.

Wi-Fi: There is free Wi-Fi available in the restaurants and VIP lounges.
