Air Madrid announced on Friday that it was to bring a halt to its operations, before Spain suspended the airline’s flying licence over the weekend.

The privately-owned carrier laid the blame for its original decision at the feet of Spain, after the government issued warnings about flight delays.

It is thought that hundreds of thousands of passengers will have been affected by the episode and officials are now working towards a resolution to minimise the disruption.

According to the Associated Press, the Civil Aviation authority’s decision to suspend the airline’s licence was taken “with total independence of the absolutely irresponsible and unilateral behavior of the company”.

Complaints about the airline’s punctuality have been intensifying for several months and one flight to Buenos Aires left a day later than scheduled in November.

But according to Expatica, plans are now in the pipeline for employees of the airline to take over from current owner Jose Luis Carillo. There has been no official comment on this speculation at this stage.

The airline, which flies to London Gatwick among other destinations, was established in 2003 and primarily serves Latin America.
