Heathrow to Amsterdam is the busiest international air route in Europe, according to figures from the Offical Airline Guide (OAG) travel information company.

The route is served by airlines including easyJet, British Airways and KLM, and sees more air traffic than other popular European routes such as London to Dublin and Frankfurt to Paris.

However, the busiest route in the world, when domestic flights are included, was found to be Barcelona to Madrid.

Other figures released by OAG include the fact that flights with budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet now make up 22 per cent of all flights in Europe, up from 18 per cent at the same time last year.

In terms of seats alone, low-cost airlines now make up 30 per cent of the total number of seats available in Europe, increasing from 24 per cent in September last year.

The statistics clearly show an increasing appetite for cheap flights on the part of Europeans. In all, there will be 21.8 million budget seats available in Europe this month.
