Plans to expand Robin Hood Airport have been put at the forefront of a number of South Yorkshire councils’ agendas, reports The Star.

Intervention by Doncaster council and a number of neighbouring local authorities has resulted in development work at the airport being placed higher up on the list of priorities for airport authorities.

Plans for the expansion – which also have the backing of regional development authority Yorkshire Forward – are to be presented to the government by Yorkshire and Humber Assembly.

Speaking to The Star, Doncaster mayor Martin Winter described Robin Hood Airport as a “regionally significant investment priority for the south Yorkshire economy”.

He continued: “The airport is Doncaster’s most important strategic asset and this re-instatement reasserts the role the airport can play in Doncaster and the South Yorkshire region, aiding regeneration and providing confidence to the private sector that future investment will be supported.”

The regional airport witnessed a 5.7 per cent year-on-year rise in passenger numbers in the first month of this year.
