Scotland is suffering from a shortage of long-haul flights, travel agents have been warned.

Several transatlantic routes were axed from Scottish airports following the collapse of XL Airways last year, and according to an industry group the gap has yet to be filled.

The Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association voiced disappointment that airlines and travel agents have not made more of an effort to replace the routes.

“We’re at the cow’s tail of the country and end up with whatever is left over from airports in the south,” spokesman Sandy MacPherson told TTG. “We hope for expansion but the reality is supply must match anticipated demand, and it’s not been the best year.”

A spokesperson for BAA said talks are ongoing about expanding routes, but that the demise of XL and Scot Travel Holidays has been a heavy blow for the market.

Glasgow and Aberdeen airports both suffered year-on-year falls in passenger numbers last month.
