Sheffield City Airport looks sure to close down now that city councillors have approved a plan to turn it into a business park.

The city council’s planning board has approved a plan for offices and light industry to be constructed on the site, which effectively ends any hope that the airport could be revived. Much of the runway will now be dug up and the hangars will need to be taken down at some point this year.

The decision was lamented by some, including councillor John Hesketh who pointed out that, because of the hilly ground in Sheffield, the existing site was the only viable location for a city airport.

He told Sheffield Today: “This decision to end the life of the airport means there will be no chance in the future for an airport.

“The decision is short-sighted and narrow-minded.”
