“Strict security measures” have helped to create the number of delays experienced by passengers at UK airports, it has been suggested.

The Air Transport Users Council (AUC) has said that there are many rules in place which can make it difficult for people to move quickly through an airport.

However, James Fremantle, industry affairs manager for the AUC, said that despite the “pressure” felt by UK airports in terms of improving security levels there has been a reduction in security waiting times.

Mr Fremantle pointed out that despite the negative publicity certain airports have received, the problem with passengers waiting around for lengthy periods of time is perhaps not quite so bad as it can be made out to be.

He did though note that some UK airports are not “up to scratch compared to foreign airports, which is where all this interest stems from”.

Mr Fremantle said: “The UK has had a lot of strict security measures in place and there has been a lot of pressure on airports to improve security.

We are seeing evidence now about security waiting times getting down and being better for passengers.”
