Birmingham International Airport has promised to find new carriers to cover the routes lost following bmibaby’s decision to suspend five of its services, according to The Birmingham Post.

The budget airline announced yesterday (November 26) that it would be halting flights to Rome, Milan, Lisbon, Madrid and Bordeaux next summer, blaming a drop in consumer demand.

However, Birmingham Airport’s chief executive, Paul Kehoe, claimed that the other airlines had already expressed interest in filling the gaps.

He told The Birmingham Post: “There are things happening that will ameliorate the impact that this has had on us. But I have asked the team to redouble their efforts to fill this gap.”

Mr Kehoe also suggested that his company needed more Midlands travellers to use their local airport, as 60 per cent of flyers from the region currently do not.

Bmibaby still operates 130 flights a week to 25 destinations from Birmingham and has offered full refunds to customers with tickets booked to any of the cancelled destinations.
