Older British travellers, so-called Saga louts, are being warned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to watch their drinking and ensure they are properly insured when overseas.

As part of its Know Before You Go campaign, the FCO is advising people to visit their GP at least six weeks before travelling, stressing this becomes more important if people feel unwell in the run-up to their trip.

Other tips include checking travel insurance policies to make sure cover extends to any planned experiences, being aware of local customs by reading up in advance and not to go for a swim after drinking or on a full stomach.

In reply, Steve Ashton, of Saga Insurance said that it was a misconception that only younger people can enjoy new experiences and challenges on holiday, saying older people shouldn’t have to put their “surf-board into storage or hang up your salopettes”.
