A plan for the future of Plymouth Airport has been outlined that aims to improve the facilities available to passengers, while ensuring the airport continues to attract visitors from outside the region.

Plymouth City Council and Sutton Harbour, who run the airport on a long lease, are to look at redevelopment plans that would see the closure of the short runway and the release of around 18 acres of land on the 123 acre site for future development.

Improvements to the airport facilities and air services would be made, and helicopter activity, engine testing and the maintenance hanger would be moved to an area further away from local residents.

Councillor Ian Bowyer, cabinet member for budget and asset management, said: “This is about enabling the airport to continue to operate and giving the headroom to the Sutton Harbour Group and the city council to work together to develop the plan for the future of the airport and investigate whether there is a business case for any future runway extension.
