Pete Durant, Global Content Manager, visited Stockholm recently and is sharing the six things he knows now that he wished he knew before his trip.
Skavsta airport to Stockholm City Terminal bus routes are run by two companies, Flygbussarna and Terravision (which run UK airport routes). However, all of the buses are branded Flygbussarna so regardless of which you book with, get on a Flygbussarna bus.
Always try the local street food. The two Swedish things to eat from a gatukök are Strömming (fried herring), Tunnbrödrulle (typical thin bread with hot dog, mashed potato, salad, onion, mustard and ketchup) and korv med mos (hot dog and mashed potato). For those with extreme tastes, add Räksalllad (shrimp salad).
Coffee shops do 5k refills on tea especially Wayne’s Coffee chain. Worth it to snuggle up with a book and a person in the cold winter months.
Weekend brunch – the Swedish version of a fry-up – in a coffee shop or deli is the thing to do. Urban Deli in Nytorget square in Södermalm is popular.
Indigo on the south side. Little bar, modest, lots of standing room forcing you to mingle and the odd Swedish celeb – Alexander Skarsgard been known to hang out there (true blood, Eric). Try the Polish Love shot – Polish vodka to be downed followed by eating a pickle covered in honey. Surprisingly good. It is in an area of bars similar to Shoreditch in London – in Södermalm around the hill of Götgatan between Slussen and Medborgarplatsen on the south side.
Take a ferry to the archipelagos and then walk back for beautiful alternative view of the city. Combine with a wander through Old Town for what makes Europe so special against trips to the rest of the world.
Pete’s random trip moment:
Table tennis in a club called Strand where there was a game of ping-pong killer. In a club. Bat in one hand, bottle in another. Still figuring out why, how and why.
Pete’s musing:
When Ryanair lands on time, they play a big trumpet number to announce their timeliness. It sounds like a herald announcing the Queen’s arrival. It confuses you – do you laugh or cry?
