Bangkok, Thailand has been voted the best city in the world for the second year in a row by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.

The magazine’s 2011 World’s Best Awards ranked the buzzing Thai capital ahead of other hugely popular cities including Sydney, Florence and New York.

Travel + Leisure magazine’s editor-in-chief Nancy Novogrod said, “The top cities overall span the globe – Bangkok, Florence, New York, Istanbul, Siem Reap and Sydney, to mention a few. The survey results revealed that more ‘remote and exotic destinations’ retained their appeal by offering a mixture of ‘authenticity and adventure,’ she added.

The awards cover all sectors related to travel, from the best city to the best hotel, island and airline. Reader responses are used to compile the results, meaning that the winners have truly been voted for by the people.

Santorini in Greece snapped up the title of World’s Best Island, pushing last year’s winner, the Galapagos Islands, into second place. The best hotel in the world was the Singita Grumeti Reserves in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, which took its place alongside six other African hotels which made it into the top ten for 2011.

Singapore Airlines scooped the Best International Airline for 2011 award, completing its impressive run of victories – the airline has won the title every year since the awards first launched in 1996. The award for the best domestic airline went to Virgin America.
