The small Essex airport came top of a satisfaction survey of more than 26,000 air travellers, scoring a whopping 92 per cent.

The survey, carried out by low-cost airline easyJet, found that 95 per cent of visitors to Southend Airport were satisfied with their experience.

Not only that, but 98 per cent of respondents said they were satisfied with the length of the check-in time and 100 per cent were satisfied with the efficiency of the check-in staff.

“We designed our new facilities to be ‘simply easier’ and we are thrilled that so many of easyJet’s passengers agree,” said Alastair Welch, Managing Director at Southend Airport.

“Our Southend team works hard to ensure we deliver on our commitments to passengers – that they should wait no more than four minutes to go through security and that, on arrival with hand baggage they should be on the rail station platform within 15 minutes of leaving the aircraft.”

The airport is currently undergoing a transformation and expansion that will see it carry two million passengers a year by 2020.

Investment of £100 million has already been pumped into the Essex airport, which saw the opening of a new terminal last year.

The decision by easyJet to make Southend its newest base has also helped the airport go from a small regional air field to a key part of London’s airport capacity.

Since launching flights at Southend Airport in April last year, easyJet has carried more than half a million passengers to destinations around Europe.

“We opened our base and operations at London Southend Airport because passenger convenience and excellent service delivery is at the heart of its design and we are confident that we’ll keep levels of customer satisfaction flying high,” said Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s UK Commercial Manager.
