The winners of the 2013 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest have been announced, and Wagner Araujo from Brazil has taken first place for his photo “Brazil Aquathlon”. Chosen from more than 15,000 images, the winning pictures show everything from quiet landscapes to surprising moments.

Here are the winning images from the 2013 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. First Prize is a 10-day Galápagos National Geographic Expedition for two, second prize a seven-day National Geographic Photography Workshop, third a six-day cruise on a Maine windjammer schooner for two and there are seven Merit Prizes – $200 gift certificates to B&H Photo and a matted and framed print of your entry.

These images will appear in the December 2013 / January 2014 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine.

First Place: Dig me river

Our featured image, above, is © Wagner Araujo / National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. He says: “I was in Manaus, Amazonas, during the Brazilian Aquathlon (swimming and running) championship. I photographed it from the water and my lens got completely wet, but there was so much energy in these boys that I just didn’t worry about that.”
