Situated only 15km (9 miles) southwest of Havana, Jose Marti International Airport (HAV) is Cuba’s main international gateway. The airport is sometimes referred to by its old name, Rancho-Boyeros Airport, in reference to the area in which the airport is located. It was renamed in memory of Cuba’s famous patriot and poet, Jose Marti.

There are four passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. Terminal 1 is used primarily for domestic flights, Terminal 2 handles Special Authority flights to and from the United States, Terminal 3 deals with international travellers, Terminal 4 deals with cargo, and Terminal 5 is used primarily by Aero Caribbean and Aerotaxi.

Flights to Jose Marti International Airport arrive from major European centres and from popular South American cities. If you’re an international traveller, there’s enough to keep you busy at the airport, where you can enjoy 24-hour service at the restaurants and shops.

Getting into Town

Train: There is no train that services the airport.

Bus: There are buses and taxi services available. Public buses leave regularly from Terminal 1, but payment must be made in non-convertible pesos, which is a problem for tourists as there is no means of obtaining these at Terminal 1.

Taxi: The taxis offer the most reliable form of transport. The two major services available at the airport are Taxi OK and Panataxi. Panataxi is the more affordable option, but it’s advisable to negotiate a fare before leaving. A ride to downtown Havana shouldn’t cost more than CUC 15 (about £10).

Car Parking

There are short-term car parks available at the three main terminals. The parking lots at Terminals 1 and 2 can each accommodate 500 cars, while Terminal 3 can house 750 vehicles. The car parks are a short walk from the terminal buildings – a mere 150 metres.

Information Desks

There are several information desks in the arrivals and departures areas of Terminal 3.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs are only available in Terminal 3, but currency exchange facilities are available at terminals 2 and 3.

Luggage: There are no left-luggage facilities, but there is a lost-and-found office.

Conference and business: There are two VIP lounges in Terminal 3. These offer phone, fax and copying facilities as well as a place to get a snack.

Other facilities: There is a pharmacy, a post office, and tour operators in Terminal 3.

Wi-Fi: There is Internet access available in Terminal 3, but this is not a free service.
