As Iceland’s largest airport, dealing solely with international flights, it’s not surprising that Keflavik International Airport is the gateway for most international travel in Iceland.

There is only one terminal building, the Leifur Eiriksson Air Terminal, named after the famed Icelandic explorer who is said to have been the first European to land in America, 500 years before Columbus.

Flights to Keflavik International arrive daily from major European and American hubs, although most airlines operate flights on a seasonal basis. At the airport there’s plenty to keep you busy, from shopping in one of the duty-free stores to lounging in the business lounge. You can even appreciate some of Iceland’s finer artwork, which is displayed in the terminal building.

As it’s a small airport, there won’t be much waiting in queues, and there are friendly and welcoming Icelandair staff ready to assist should you need it.

Getting into Town

Train: There are no trains servicing the airport.

Bus: The Flybus operates at the airport, with buses leaving approximately 40 minutes after flights arrive. The bus takes passengers to Reykjavik, stopping at Hotel Viking in Hafnarfjordur, and Aktu Taktu in Gardabær upon request. Fares cost 1500 ISK (£8) one way or 2700 ISK (about £14) return.

Taxi: Two taxi services run from the airport, with cabs easily located directly outside the arrivals area. The journey into Reykjavik takes between 30 and 45 minutes and costs between 7500 – 9000 ISK (£40-£48). Some of the hotels in the area also provide a shuttle service for their guests.

Car Parking

There are both long-term and short-term parking options available. Short-term car parks are situated to either side of the terminal building. Parking costs 150 ISK (£0.80) per hour for the first 24 hours, after that it costs 3600 ISK (almost £20) per day.

Long term parking, located opposite the terminal building, costs 800 ISK (£4) per day for the first week, 600 ISK (£3) for the second week, and 400 ISK (£2) for the third week of parking. After this a rate of 350 ISK (almost £2) is levied per day.

Information Desks

There are information desks near the baggage claim area, the transit hall, next to the check-in counters, and an Icelandic tourism office in the arrivals hall.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: Landsbanki Islands has a reception desk in the arrivals hall, and a foreign exchange and tax refund desk in the departures area. There is also an ATM located in the arrivals area.

Luggage: The lost-and-found property goes to the Airport Terminal Police offices, which are only open from 9am to 1pm during weekdays.

Conference and business: Icelandair has a business lounge where passengers can relax or catch up on a bit of work.

Other facilities: There are some travel agencies, a children’s play area, and a tourism promotional space showing a promotional video on Iceland.

Wi-Fi: Wireless Internet access is available and there are Internet kiosks dotted throughout the terminal. Neither is free, with rates fixed by Skyggnir Internet Access. Rates vary in price, costing 490 ISK (about £2.60) per hour, 990 ISK (£5.30) for four hours, and 1990 ISK (almost £11) for 24 hours.
