Formerly Denpasar International Airport, Ngurah Rai Airport is between Kuta and Jimbaran, 13km (9 miles) south of Denpasar, the capital and largest city in exotic Bali, Indonesia. It was renamed after Indonesian national hero I Gusta Ngurah Rai, who was killed in the Indonesian Revolution against Dutch rule in 1946.

Bali is a popular holiday spot and it is possible to get a flight there via most major airports. Flights to Ngurah Rai Airport arrive from hubs across the Pacific region and Australia such as Hong Kong, Bangkok, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Singapore, Jakarta, Taipei, Tokyo, Phuket and Seoul, as well as airports further afield like Amsterdam and Moscow.

Although the terminals have a combined capacity of eight million passengers per year, the airport saw more than 11 million passengers in 2010. It is the third-busiest airport in Indonesia and is often over-crowded and chaotic. Extensive expansion is scheduled to be completed by 2013, so be prepared to deal with some delays and inconvenience over the next couple of years. If arriving at peak times, especially in tourist season, be sure to bring a healthy dose of patience.

Getting into Town

Train: There are no trains in Bali.

Bus: There’s a public bus that goes from the airport to Tegal Station in Denpasar, just under an hour away, for IDR 10,000 (approximately £0.70).

Bemos: You could also try negotiating a fare with the ubiquitous green Bemos (mini-bus taxis). You’ll need to leave the airport grounds to catch one from outside the gates to the airport – turn right as you exit the terminal. You can also charter an entire Bemo (one with a yellow licence plate) from the airport, which is useful if travelling in a group.

Car Parking

There’s a single large car park in front of the terminal building with more than 2,000 spaces, with both long- and short-term rates available.

There is an information desk in the terminal.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: Post office, ATMs and currency exchange.

Luggage: There are several porters on hand to carry your luggage for a fee, which you’ll need to negotiate.

Conference and business: There are two VIP lounges. The Prada Lounge costs IDR 100,000 (about £7) if you aren’t flying Business Class (if you are, it’s free).

Other facilities: Public telephones, prayer rooms and mosques, pharmacy.

Wi-Fi: There is Wi-Fi access in the Executive Lounge in the International Terminal.
