Penang International Airport – formerly known as Bayan Lepas International – is a visitor-friendly mid-size airport, offering connections to many premier destinations in south east Asia.

Winner of the 2009 Airport of the Year Award (for airports with fewer than 15 million annual passengers) in the Frost and Sullivan Asia Pacific Aerospace and Defence Awards, Penang International is a great place to start your Malaysian adventure.

Flights to Penang International Airport are offered by a wide variety of carriers (including low-cost airlines Firefly and AirAsia), from attractive Asian destinations such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Medan. Located just 16km from George Town, while Penang International is an important regional hub, the airport’s sleek, efficient design ensures that the time you spend in transit will pass by in pleasant, stress-free fashion.

Getting into Town

Bus: Rapid Penang offers a bus service between the airport and George Town city. Tickets may be purchased from the Rapid Penang desk in the main terminal building, and passengers will find the buses one level down. There are two routes offered (102 and 401) – ask when purchasing your ticket about which one to board. Buses depart every 30 minutes between 5.30am and 11.25pm. Journey time into the city is roughly 30 minutes, and will cost a maximum of RM4 (about £0.80). Alternatively, the Penang Yellow Bus Company offers a service between the airport and Weld Quay in George Town. Buses depart between 6am and 10pm daily, and tickets cost RM2 (£0.40).

Shuttle: Courtesy airport shuttles (for guests only) are offered by the following Penang hotels: Hotel Equatorial Penang, Century Bay Residences, Paradise Sandy Beach Resort, The Bayview Beach Resort

Taxis: Prepaid taxis may be booked at the counter located on the right hand side of the arrivals hall of Penang International Airport. The fare will depend on which of the seven zones you will be travelling to in George Town (these prices are valid between 6am and midnight; thereafter there will be a 50 per cent surcharge): MR14 (Zone 1); MR22 (Zone 2); MR26 (Zone 3); MR31 (Zone 4); MR38 (Zone 5 – George Town central); MR47 (Zone 6); MR60 (Zone 7) – from £3 to £12. For your return trip, you can negotiate a fee with your taxi driver – but you shouldn’t pay more than you did on your way in.

Money and communications: There is a bank in the main terminal building at Penang International Airport, as well as numerous ATMs and bureaux de change.

Luggage: There is an information desk on the ground floor.

Conference and business: There is a business centre in the main terminal building.

Other facilities: A post office; VIP lounge newsagent and tobacconist, chemist, travel agent offices, first-aid facilities. Penang International has full access and facilities for disabled passengers.

Wi-Fi: There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the airport. A couple of restaurants – Kenny Rogers Roasters and McDonalds – also have free Wi-Fi.
