Puerto Plata’s Gregorio Luperon Airport is a no-frills, highly functional little airport (the fourth-largest in the Dominican Republic), offering good connections to many international destinations. Flights to Puerto Plata are regular and surprisingly affordable – so if you haven’t had a break for a while, maybe it’s time to dust off your credit card and treat yourself to a dream beach holiday.

Described by Christopher Columbus in 1492 as the “fairest land under heaven”, the Dominican Republic’s Puerto Plata is one of those idyllic holiday destinations, where no matter what you do, you’re bound to return home feeling refreshed, and generally more in love with the world than when you left home.

Getting into Town

Just 18km (11 miles) west of town on Highway 5, getting to and from the airport in Puerto Plata won’t be too much of a struggle at all.

Shuttles: If flying into the Dominican Republic as part of a tour package, your tour operator or hotel may offer transport from the airport.

Taxis: Taxis are readily available at the stands outside the terminal building. There is a fixed rate for popular destinations – these fares should be prominently displayed inside the taxi itself, but if they aren’t, agree on a price before setting off. For destinations such as Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada, Costambar, Sosua, Cabarete, Cofresi and Riu, expect to pay in the region of US$25–35.
