In the first of a new series, Cheap Flight News names its airport for May.

This month’s favourite is Stansted, that airport north of London so beloved of low-cost airlines and … President Barack Obama. Reasons we love it?

It’s home to 29 airlines including the leading lights of the low-cost revolution – Ryanair, easyJet, Air Berlin and Germanwings.

Airlines at Stansted serve more destinations around Europe than those from any other airport in the world. From Aarhus (Ryanair) to Zweibrucken (also Ryanair).

It’s accessible. The Stansted Express is an easy, if not exactly speedy, way of getting to/from the airport. Several coaches, including EasyBus and National Express, also zip between Central London and Stansted.

Facilities are top notch. The light-suffused airport welcomes more than 22 million passengers per year effortlessly with a wide selection of coffee shops, sandwich bars, fast-food outlets and restaurants as well as business lounges and wireless hotspots. Shops are, to quote the airport’s website, “to fly for” and range from Accessorize to World of Whiskies.

It has friends in very high places. As Cheap Flight News reported earlier this week, STN is President Obama’s arrival airport of choice in the UK. White House officials were so impressed with the way the airport handled the arrival of Air Force One on President Obama’s recent visit that they have pledged to make “Stansted the ‘preferred commercial airport in the UK’ for all US government personnel”.
