Belfast International Airport has won the Special Achievement Award at the 2007 Northern Ireland Travel and Tourism Awards.

The hub was recognised for its rapid growth, which includes more than 40 direct scheduled flights to Europe and North America from the likes of bmibaby, Continental Airlines, Jet2.com and Flyglobespan.

As well as this, Aer Lingus recently announced that it would make Belfast Airport its European base, with nine new routes beginning during the next few months.

The airport’s managing director, John Doran, said the award “clearly demonstrate[s] that Belfast International Airport provides passengers with the destinations they want to go to, when they want to go, all directly from their local airport”.

easyJet picked up the Best Low-Fare Airline prize, Continental Airlines scooped the Best Worldwide Airline award, and MyTravel Airways received the Best Charter Airline gong.

The awards gala was held in the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, Newcastle, and hosted by TV personality Angela Rippon.

Earlier this year the airport broke through the five million passengers per year mark for the first time.
